Applying for a Passport in New York

New York has 62 counties and the highest passport application volume of any state. New York City processes hundreds of thousands annually across borough offices and USPS facilities. The city is home to two regional passport agency offices for urgent travel.

To apply for your first U.S. passport (or to replace a lost/expired one), you must appear in person at an authorized acceptance facility. In New York, this means a USPS post office, county clerk or recorder office, or a city/town hall with State Department authorization.

Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester county clerks saw demand spike after library closures. NYC residents should check both USPS appointments and borough city record offices — the latter are often overlooked.

What to Bring in New York

Requirements are federal and identical in every state. For all in-person DS-11 applications bring: completed (unsigned) DS-11 form, certified birth certificate plus photocopy, government-issued photo ID plus photocopy, a 2×2 compliant passport photo, and payment — New York30 book or New York00 for children under 16 (check/money order to "U.S. Department of State") plus a separate 625 acceptance fee to the facility.

Walk-In Availability in New York

Walk-in passport availability varies across New York. Urban USPS locations generally require appointments; rural and smaller-town post offices are more likely to accept walk-ins during dedicated passport hours.
