Connecticut has 8 counties but 169 municipalities, and town clerks are the primary local government option. Connecticut town clerks are among the best walk-in opportunities in the country post-library closures — many accept walk-ins and have far shorter wait times than USPS.

To apply for your first U.S. passport (or to replace a lost/expired one), you must appear in person at an authorized acceptance facility. In Connecticut, this means a USPS post office, county clerk or recorder office, or a city/town hall with State Department authorization.

Connecticut was heavily impacted by library closures. Town clerks in Stamford, Hartford, New Haven, Bridgeport, and Waterbury have expanded capacity. These offices are often significantly underutilized compared to post offices.

What to Bring in Connecticut

Requirements are federal and identical in every state. For all in-person DS-11 applications bring: completed (unsigned) DS-11 form, certified birth certificate plus photocopy, government-issued photo ID plus photocopy, a 2×2 compliant passport photo, and payment — Connecticut30 book or Connecticut00 for children under 16 (check/money order to "U.S. Department of State") plus a separate 85 acceptance fee to the facility.
