How to Track Your U.S. Passport Application Status After Submitting

After submitting your passport application at an acceptance facility, you have one job: wait and monitor. Here is exactly how to check status, what each status message means, and when to escalate.

Step 1: What You Receive at the Acceptance Facility

When you submit your DS-11 application at a post office, county clerk, or other acceptance facility, the agent gives you a receipt. This receipt contains your application tracking number. Keep this receipt โ€” it is your only way to track your application online.

The receipt also shows the date your application was submitted, the facility location, and the fees paid. Take a photo of it immediately as backup.

Step 2: When Tracking Becomes Available

Status information does not appear immediately. After your facility submission, the acceptance agent batches your application with others and mails or delivers the batch to a passport processing center. This takes 1โ€“3 business days. After the processing center receives and logs your application, status appears online โ€” typically 2โ€“4 business days after your appointment.

If you check the day after your appointment and see nothing, this is normal. Don't call yet โ€” the system hasn't updated.

How to Check Status Online

Go to travel.state.gov and click "Check Application Status." You'll need:

This returns your current status. You can also call 1-877-487-2778 to check status by phone โ€” useful if the online tool shows no results and you're not sure whether your application was received.

Your Original Documents: What Happens to Them

One of the most anxiety-inducing parts of the passport process: your original certified birth certificate goes with your application. Here's what happens:

If you don't receive your birth certificate back within 8 weeks of your passport arriving, call 1-877-487-2778 to inquire.

When to Call the Passport Agency

Most tracking anxieties don't require a call โ€” the system is just slow to update. Call 1-877-487-2778 if:

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, but it's complicated. Call 1-877-487-2778 as soon as possible. If your application hasn't reached the processing center yet, cancellation may be straightforward. Once it's in processing, cancellation requires a formal written request and your original documents will still be held until the request is processed. You will not receive a refund on government fees if the application has already been processed.

Call 1-877-487-2778 immediately and explain your travel date. If your passport is already printed and mailed, they can advise on whether it will arrive in time. If it hasn't been printed yet, you may qualify for an emergency or urgent appointment at a regional passport agency โ€” see our expedited guide. Act immediately; don't wait another day.

Not necessarily. Original documents are returned separately from the passport and often arrive at slightly different times. Wait 2โ€“3 weeks after receiving your passport. If your birth certificate still hasn't arrived, call 1-877-487-2778 to report it. The State Department tracks outgoing documents and can investigate. In the unlikely event it was lost in mail, they will assist you with getting a replacement from your state vital records office.
